Makes sense if you unload Sutter for top 6 help. But sending sutter with a young dmen plus sending out something for Berglund adds up real quick. I'd take a run at Fehr personally if he's available in FA.

I think they might keep Sutter to start the season unless someone throws a better player at them, then trade him before Xmas unless he is playing the house down, then he'll go on trade deadline after his value has skyrocketed (hopefully).

He will stay until Sundy is assessed so JR knows what he needs which is not a 3C due to Sundy being a capable player (again hopefully). Or JR will trade him for a #5 D man - you can never have enough of those guys!

If you guys have a little time search 'state of origin 2015 game 1', a nice break from hockey. These are the best playing the best in Australia - NSW playing against Queensland. That's Rugby League ladies & gents!

I've heard multiple reports that he'll be traded this offseason. I think that's wise. His value will never be higher than it is right now. Imagine that... The Penguins trying to maximize the return for an asset for a change.

Not sure what exactly Pens can trade to acquire him. If he were a UFA that would be one thing, but I doubt he is going to be cheap in acquisition costs and Penguins don't have much to give up for him.

Could you see the Canucks being a good trade partner for Sutter? They have plenty of young guys (not sure how good), but they could be a 2 for 2 trade maybe. Sutter & Harrington maybe for 2 of their F. Kassian possibly being 1??

That's the hard part unless you can get the blues to sell low on him like they did with Cole. After watching a few years of Bortz's limited abilities, it's hard to understand that deal. Maybe they simply want to dump his salary and replace him through FA. I've read a bunch of St. Louis blogs and it seems the fans want him gone.

Like Gunner says... Teams move on from good players all of the time. Cough, cough Despres.

in reply to jfkst1..

I agree. I'd rather have Berglund over Sutter but I dont think I would give up a Dumoulin or Harrington for that slight improvement on the 3rd C.

We only have so many assets to work with to improve the top 6.

All this being said, watch J.R. go out and trade away the farm for Jordan Staal

Hitch and Army love Berg so it would take a decent offer to get him IMO

And Berg is not as bad as most blues fans make him out to be just that his price tag is a bit much for us to handle right now with Tarasenko and Schwartz either due a raise or will be due a raise next offseason.

I think we just ran out of patience on Cole. He was good for a couple stretches and then he'd just be a turnover machine. Plus we have too much depth on D as it is.

Berglund is not going anywhere. He was one of the few guys who stepped it up in the playoffs.

I'm all for Berglund on this team. He'd be awessome as our 3rd line C. Big body just like Staal. Him, Fehr and Soderberg Would be Nice pick ups.

Did Berglund play center all season?

3.7M cap hit is probably too much for a 3rd line center, especially if you have some cap issues like the Penguins do. (13 million in cap space roughly, 13 players signed for 15-16).

He costs more money than Sutter, but the production was worse and he had better wingers too boot. Not sure why people think he is an absolute upgrade.

Goc was OK. He was a healthy scratch for the last 2 games of the playoffs. Borts aggravated a pre-existing injury late in the year against Chicago so he sat out the rest of the year pretty much.

Borts looked good in before he got hurt. He stuck up for his teammates and was throwing his body around like we needed Cole to do.

Berglund played wing with Statsny and Jaskin for most of the year. He seems more effective on the wing for sure.

I still think he's an upgrade...just not worth giving up assets for until we have solidified the top 6.

For example, If we traded Sutter and Bennett for Boedker, and Harrington for Berglund I'd probably be okay with it. But I feel like it would take more to get both those players so it's not entirely realistic.

With how these teams have been throwing around 1st round picks, keep sutter until the deadline. There have been very average players getting 1st or 2nd round picks. Let sundqvist take the 4th line duty and give him some experience. Trade sutter in February and either slide Sund to the 3rd or winnik could slide in there.

To youmeanddupuis

I agree not wanting to overpay for Berglund but I'd say he more than a slight upgrade over Sutter. Berglund has a higher ppg than Sutter, .48 to .37 and he has more potential. Also Berglund would be more versatile, he could play the wing with Malkin if needed or moved up to 2C if malkin or Crosby go down.
